The following is a brief description of tax exemptions currently available to qualifying village residents. Information provided herein is believed to be accurate, but is not warranted. Please refer to the Office of Real Property Tax Services website (ORPTS,) the state oversight agency for assessment administration.
Please note: The filing period for all exemption applications in any year is always January 2 through May 1.
Important Changes to the BASIC STAR Exemption
As of April 2, 2016, all new BASIC STAR exemptions will be administered on the state level by the ORPTS, Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF). All new BASIC STAR exemption applications shall be completed and submitted electronically via the ORPTS website. All BASIC STAR exemption applicants that filed after September 15, 2015 will receive a credit in the form of a check mailed directly from the DTF. All existing (those on the books prior to September 15, 2015) BASIC STAR exemption recipients will continue to receive the BASIC STAR exemption benefit as a credit on September 1 school tax bills.
All questions regarding the new BASIC STAR exemption program, or about the status of applications previously filed with that office must be directed to ORPTS. Please visit www.tax.ny.gov. Telephone inquiries can be made at their helpline at #(518) 457-2036.
The amount of the BASIC STAR benefit is the same, whether administered as a credit check, or as a credit on the school tax billing.
